Japan is a high living cost country. Whhhattt??? Yes, it is. But if you have very low income, let consider the cheapest way to live in this high-cost country.
This is Sapporo! Hokkaido! Japan!
Home food cooking is the best way to live cheap. Don't worry. The lunch box is very common in Japanese culture. You can bring your lunch box to school or to your office. But buying food is not always cheap. Some convenience stores may sell some meat, vegetables or fruits but they are a bit high priced. Let's go to the shops where you can buy cheap groceries. Click on it to access the location!
1. 新鮮やさい・くだもの 八百丸/ Shinsen Yasai ・ Kudamono Hachi Hyaku Maru
You can find all kinds of fresh vegetables and fruits. Occasionally, you may find meat but not a fresh one. It is frozen meat. This shop sells things very cheap if you consider the shop which is closest to the central Sapporo. It is about 3 min walking from Kita Nijuyon Jo (or Kita 24 train station). You can go there by bike/walking or if you are a bit far, take the train, Namboku Line (the Green Line). Don't forget, the shop open from 10 am to 8 pm.
2. 生鮮中央市場 / Seisen Chūōshijō
You can find almost fresh fruits and vegetables. Sometimes, the price is a bit higher than in the first shop but still at a cheap price. No meat solve in that shop. It is just only 2 min walking from Kita Nijuyon Jo (or Kita 24 train station). You can go there by bike/walking or if you are a bit far, take the train, Namboku Line (the Green Line). It is very closed to the first shop as well. The shop opens from 10 am to 7 pm.
Address: 〒001-0024 北海道札幌市北区北24条西9丁目1−1 or 〒001-0024 北海道札幌市北区北24条西9丁目1−1
This supermarket is cheaper than AEON. You can find everything in this shop, from grocery to household materials, shampoo, makeup, meat, vegetable, fruits and everything more.....
The shop is very big. The special thing, from 8 pm, the meat is usually discount from 20% to 40% off. Amazing! It is very busy at the weekend though and a lot of people like buying discount meat as well. Not only students but Japanese mama as well.... It is not far from the first and second shop. But it takes about 10 min by walking from Kita Nijuyon Jo (or Kita 24 train station). Open from 10 am to 12 midnight!
Every food is sold here. Open from 10 am to 7 pm.
5. 2nd STREET is the second-hand shop. There are many locations, just search "Second street Sapporo" Boooommm.... Vola! You can find almost everything except for food. Yeeehhh it doesn't sell food.
